Position Summary:
The Substitute Custodian provides custodial support throughout the Macon County R-1 School District on an as-needed basis. This position will primarily be used to provide coverage for regular custodial staff due to absences, vacancies, special events, or other District needs.
Days and hours are not guaranteed. This is an as-needed substitute position, and the number of available shifts may vary from week to week. Substitute custodians may be contacted when coverage is needed and may accept assignments based on their availability.
Work will primarily take place during evening hours; however, assignments may include daytime or evening work depending on District needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform general custodial duties to maintain clean, safe, and sanitary school facilities.
- Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, and clean floors.
- Clean and disinfect classrooms, offices, hallways, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, floors, and fixtures.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and replace liners.
- Clean doors, windows, glass, drinking fountains, and other surfaces as needed.
- Restock restroom and custodial supplies, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.
- Assist with cleaning cafeterias, gymnasiums, locker rooms, and other areas as assigned.
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for school activities and special events when needed.
- Properly use and maintain custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning products.
- Follow all District safety procedures and manufacturer instructions when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Secure assigned areas by checking doors, windows, and lights at the end of the shift when directed.
- Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damaged equipment, or other facility issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Perform other custodial and facility-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Must be dependable and willing to work flexible hours as needed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and conduct oneself professionally in a school environment.
- Must meet all District employment requirements, including required background checks.
Physical Requirements:
The employee must be able to perform the physical duties associated with custodial work, including prolonged standing and walking; bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling; climbing stairs and ladders when necessary; and lifting and moving custodial supplies, trash, furniture, and equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Work Schedule:
This is a substitute/as-needed position. Workdays, shifts, and hours are not guaranteed. Assignments will be offered based on staffing needs throughout the District. The amount and frequency of available work may vary.
Although this position will primarily provide evening custodial coverage, assignments may include daytime or evening hours depending upon District needs.
Supervisor:
Reports to the Director of Maintenance and/or designated District supervisor.
Terms of Employment:
Employment is on an as-needed substitute basis in accordance with District policies and procedures. Placement on the substitute custodial list does not guarantee a minimum number of workdays, shifts, or hours.
This substitute position should not be considered a full-time position and does not include benefits provided to eligible full-time custodial employees unless otherwise required by District policy or applicable law.
