Description

The Macon R-1 School District is seeking a Crossing Guard for the 2024/2025 school year.  

 

Our school crossing guard is responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of students, pedestrians, and other individuals at designated school crossing points.  The role involves directing traffic, assisting children in crossing streets safely, and promoting pedestrian safety near school zones.

  

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in public safety or working with children is a plus
  • Ability to stand for long periods, walk, and direct traffic during various weather conditions.
  • Good communication skills, ability to work independently, and basic knowledge of traffic safety rules
  • Must pass background check 

 

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Typical work schedule is before and after school hours;
  2. Direct students and other pedestrians safely across streets, ensuring they follow appropriate safety rules;
  3. Manage traffic flow to ensure vehicles yield to pedestrians at designated crosswalks during high-traffic times;
  4. Use clear signals and verbal instructions to guide pedestrians and drivers to follow safety guidelines;
  5. Watch for potential hazards, including speeding vehicles or unsafe driving behaviors, and report concerns to designated officials;
  6. Reinforce pedestrian safety practices with students, such as looking both ways before crossing and using crosswalks;
  7. Perform duties in various weather conditions, including rain, snow and extreme temperatures, ensuring safety at all times;
  8. Be prepared to respond to emergencies, assist in accidents, and contact emergency services if necessary;
  9. Maintain a log of incidents, accidents and unusual occurrences for review by school administration

 

Communication Skills:  

  1. Ability to give clear, concise and loud instructions to both children and drivers.
  2. Ability to show courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.
  3. Ability to stay calm in emergency situations.
  4. Ability to show positive, confident and alert body language helps convey authority and attention to safety.
